Charley Pride wins Entertainer of the Year. Charley Pride's career has been a remarkable one. Despite his youth and background, the country singer garnered much praise and recognition. His early days as a working-class kid in rural Mississippi were filled with hard work and determination. As a child, he struggled to prove his connection to country music. Despite his challenges, Pride eventually succeeded and rose to the top of the country charts. Pride won his first CMA Awards trophy in 1964. He was the first African American to receive this honor.
