Drake and The Weeknd Will Boycott the Grammys Next Year

This is why Drake and The Weeknd will boycott the Grammys

The two biggest rappers have recently gotten into a heated feud with the Recording Academy. Both have publicly announced that they will not attend the Grammys because of their feud. Nicki Minaj is also reportedly boycotting the show as well. The Recording Academy has yet to comment on the matter. Pitchfork has reached out to the artists' representatives to see what they have to say.

Nicki Minaj

Drake and The Weeknd have announced that they will boycott the Grammy Awards because of Nicki Minaj's recent controversy. Minaj was upset that her song "Super-Freaky Girl" was moved from the rap category to the pop category. She also expressed frustration that Drake won Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance. Minaj has taken to social media to air her frustration.

Both artists have expressed frustration with the Recording Academy in recent tweets. The Weeknd wrote that the Grammys are "corrupt" and, "Nicki Minaj is being shut out of the awards." In response, other artists like Tinashe and Kid Cudi have come to their defense.

Drake and The Weeknd are likely to be the main performers, but it is unclear which category they will be competing in. It is also unclear why Minaj is boycotting. Drake has been a nominee for Best Rap Album, but it is unclear whether she will perform at the Grammys.

The Grammys are a major event for the music industry. The Grammys have traditionally failed to recognize black artists. In fact, no rap album has won the album of the year category since 2004. But in 2018, the Recording Academy took steps to address this problem. In a move that will take place in the years to come, all 61 Grammy categories will be decided by voting members of the Recording Academy. The new requirements will require 90% of members to be eligible to vote.

The Weeknd and Drake both have issues with the Grammys. During the 2017 Grammy Awards, The Weeknd's album, "Darkside," wasn't nominated for Record of the Year. Both Drake and The Weeknd have were boycotting the awards for two years.

Drake

Drake and The Weeknd have both announced that they will boycott the Grammys next year. The pair has publicly stated that they are unhappy with the Grammys' snubs, but both artists have not commented on the exact reason for their decision. Drake's boycott is not the first time he's been critical of the Grammys. Last year, he criticized the Recording Academy for nominating "Hotline Bling" in rap categories and pulled his two-album nominations. The Weeknd's album "After Hours" has won four Grammy Awards so far, and he's also upset that his album wasn't nominated for Best Rap Album.

The Weeknd and Drake are also dissatisfied with the Grammys' process. Drake didn't submit his solo albums to be considered, but he was still credited for several songs. Moreover, the Recording Academy has a long and contentious history with Drake. Although Drake didn't receive a single Grammy nomination for Hotline Bling in 2017, his music was still ranked highly in voter's ballots.

In addition to refusing to participate in the Grammys, Drake, and The Weeknd have also refused to submit their albums for consideration. Although the two have been working together for a decade, they both expressed frustration with the workings of the Recording Academy. Their albums 'Dawn FM' and 'Honestly, Nevermind' were both huge successes, but neither Drake nor The Weeknd have submitted their songs for review.

Drake and The Weeknd have both publicly criticized the Grammys this year. They also said that they will not submit their albums for consideration, as they are not interested in being snubbed. In addition, Silk Sonic, who is also boycotting the Grammys, has also publicly said they will not attend the awards.

The Grammys have long been criticized for promoting white artists, and this year Drake and The Weeknd have gone a step further by boycotting. The rap and singer will not allow their labels to submit their music to the Grammys, saying that the Grammys aren't representative of their fans' interests.

His feud with the Recording Academy

In November, The Weeknd tweeted "The Grammys are corrupt" and repeated the sentiment today. Originally scheduled for January, the awards ceremony was delayed due to a coronavirus outbreak in California. The show is being staged in a different format this year. There will be five stages with performances alternating live and recorded. The Weeknd and Drake plan to perform a medley of songs at the show.

The Grammys have been a source of controversy for years, and Drake has been vocal about his displeasure with the academy. The rapper boycotted the 2017 Grammys but later complained that his song Hotline Bling had was overlooked in rap categories. He removed two of his 2022 Grammy nominations from the slate, which only recognized his single for Best Rap Performance.

The Grammys are considered the pinnacle of the music industry, and Drake and The Weeknd have been involved in the industry for a decade. However, this year, they've decided to boycott the Grammys because they feel the organization doesn't reflect the music they create. In addition, The Weeknd's album, "After Hours," didn't receive any nominations.

Regardless of the reason behind the boycott, Drake and The Weeknd are not the only music artists to boycott the Grammys. Kendrick Lamar and Childish Gambino have also opted out this year.

Frank Ocean has also publicly criticized the Grammys. He criticized the ceremony's lack of diversity and transparency. "Winning an award on television does not make me a successful artist," he wrote on his Tumblr.

Another musician who has decided to boycott the Grammys is Kanye West. He has not attended the Grammys since the 2015 ceremony and has since been critical of the organization. He has claimed that the Academy failed to properly acknowledge his collaboration with Jay-Z. Meanwhile, the 2021 Grammys will be held this Sunday in Los Angeles. Other notable artists who are expected to perform include Cardi B, Billi B, Haim, Harry Styles, and Megan Thee Stallion.

Nicki Minaj's participation in the Best Pop Solo Performance category

There is no question that Nicki Minaj has some issues with Grammy placements. The singer is expected to compete in the Best Pop Solo Performance category at next year's Grammy Awards for her song "Super-Freaky Girl." On Instagram Live, Minaj revealed her frustration with this decision. She has not yet responded to requests for comment from The Record Academy.

Minaj has also expressed disappointment that her song "Super-Freaky Girl" was bumped out of the rap category and shifted into the pop category. This is a common complaint from artists who feel displaced by the Grammys. Minaj also pointed out that Drake has won the awards for Best Rap Song and Best Rap/Sung Performance.

The Weeknd has also criticized the Grammys in recent weeks. The rapper previously stated that he would not attend the Grammys as long as Minaj did not participate in the Best Pop Solo Performance category. In addition to Minaj, fellow rappers Childish Gambino and Kendrick Lamar have also said that they will not attend.

The Grammys are becoming increasingly controversial because of accusations of racial bias. African-American artists are more commonly awarded in the Rap, R&B, and Urban categories than in other categories. Some artists of color have also voiced their concerns about the lack of diversity and transparency within the Recording Academy.

The Grammys will be broadcast live on CBS on Sunday, Feb. 5, and will be streamed online via Paramount Plus. Nominations will be announced on Tuesday, Nov. 15. The 65th Annual Grammy Awards will air on CBS on Sunday, Feb. 5 at 8 p.m.
